In a squash fold, some paper is opened out, and then flattened. A large thick arrow usually shows you where to press down.

The Preliminary base is one of the four main bases of origami,
but is not used as much as the other four. This is because it is a
halfway step towards forming the Bird base and the Frog base. Click here for diagrams |

This simple model is folded from a Preliminary base and
incorporates several squash folds. The final step is rather fun as
you have to open out the square base to make the model 3D in shape.
